The Edworthy Vision Centre is one of the oldest clinics in Calgary. The clinic itself was started by the late Dr. Donald Ross in 1946, and was located on the second floor of a brand new two story building across 7th Avenue from The Bay. Dr. Ross told us that he could see the mountains from his second floor window at that time!

Dr. George Edworthy, a third generation Calgary native, graduated from Pacific University in Oregon in 1961 and joined Dr. Ross. Dr. George Edworthy was one of the earliest Optometrists to fit contact lenses, and the clinic developed a reputation of expertise and innovation in the field. Dr. George retired in 2011.

Our Current Doctors:

Dr. Gene Edworthy, George's son, graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1981 and joined the Practice, as Dr. Ross retired. Dr. Gene continued to build the reputation of the clinic, doing clinical trials on new contact lenses, doing sports vision research and teaching in the faculty of kinesiology of the University of Calgary, and lecturing professionally on new technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography, which the Edworthy Vision Centre was the first optometric clinic in Canada to aquire and use clinically.

A community leader, Dr. Edworthy has served on the boards of the Canadian Olympic Committee, the Canadian Olympic Foundation, the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary, WinSport, EducationMatters, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Calgary Preservation Society, and more. He has also provided many years of service providing eye care to people of developing nations through Canadian Vision Care.

Dr. Glen Ong joined the Edworthy Vision Centre in 2015. A Calgary native, he earned his Bsc in Calgary, graduated with his Optometry degree from UC Berkeley, then did a residency in Ocular Disease and Advanced Contact Lenses at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Glen has a strong interest in eye disease, myopia control, and orthokeratology.
